Dear Families of Room 3, Wow…. how time flies when you’re learning and having fun! We count the days every morning in Calendar Math and the kids know we’re in the home stretch now. One by one, my gaggle of 6 year olds is slowly transforming into a troop of more mature 7 year olds. Don’t forget to take the time to read with your child whenever you find an extra moment. In first grade, there's many ways to read - sometimes you read to your child, sometimes your child reads to you, and sometimes you read together. It's fun to mix it up! Ms. Sweeney

ANIMAL HABITATS
The Museum of Science Traveling Program (along with some animal friends) will visit Grade 1 to teach us about Animal Habitats, one of our science standards in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. |
|
Please help your child choose an appropriate Show & Tell item and prepare to talk about it to the class. Something unique or special to your family is best. Try to avoid hand-held video games, as it gets kind of boring after the 10th one and there’s not much to say about them. No valuables, breakables, or weapons please!

Notes to Parents
Absent Notes – If your child is absent or tardy, you must send in a note. These are collected and given to the principal at the end of each marking period. Homework – Homework is for practicing skills we have worked on at school. I check the homework each day for completion. Please help your child fix incorrect homework items, since first graders respond best to immediate feedback. By the time they get to school in the morning, they are ready for new work. I am not sending completed homework back home, since it tends to pile up in our already overflowing desks. Homework Folders - Please check and empty your child’s homework folder every day. The take-home papers and parent notices start to pile up and the kids get confused about what is new and what is old. Take-Home Books – Every morning before the bell rings, your child has the opportunity to trade in their take-home book for a new one. A prize is given for each completed reading log. Weekly Tests – Phonics/Spelling and Reading Comprehension Tests are given every Friday. Math tests occur at the middle and end of each chapter. Please go over all homework, take-home papers and tests with your child to see where they may need extra help. Library – We’ll be going to the library every Wednesday to return and take out books. Please make sure your child returns his/her library book each Wednesday to help make this exchange run smoothly.

2009
Welcome to First Grade. My name is Ms. Sweeney and I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year.
First grade may be the most important and possibly the most difficult year in a child’s life. It’s a time when kids gain a tremendous amount of new knowledge and skills. I’m really looking forward to working with your child and I know we are going to have a wonderful and very productive year. I’ll tell you more about the curriculum at Open House.
If you have any questions or concerns, just let me know. I can meet with you almost any day after school.
Thank you,
Ms. Sweeney - Grade 1 - Room 3

School Hours - 8:15 am - 2:15 pm. Children will be marked tardy after 8:30 am.
Breakfast - Breakfast begins at 8:15 am and ends at 8:30 am. If your child eats breakfast at school, please make sure they arrive at 8:15 to allow enough time to eat.
Snack – We have a quick “working snack” each morning. Please send in a small snack with your child - one food item and/or one drink only. No candy, soda, gum, or glass bottles please. The healthier - the better!
Attendance - Please call the office and leave a message when your child is going to be absent or late. Remember to send in a note upon return to school.
Homework - Regular homework (Monday-Thursday) began on Monday 9/14. Please check your child’s backpack and homework folder each day for important notices, tests, finished papers, etc.
Personal Belongings – Please write your child’s name inside coats, lunch boxes, and backpacks. It helps when kids have identical things.

School Supplies Many families have already sent in some of these items, but if not, here’s a suggested list. 1. Homework Folder – any sturdy folder for homework, take-home papers, parent notices. 2. Black Expo dry-erase marker and something to use as a whiteboard eraser (an old sock or washcloth works just fine). 3. Glue Stick 4. Pair of school scissors (Fiskars or similar brand). 5. Plastic pencil box. 6. Box of tissues.
